ISF Rookie De-Slot Rules 2018

The ISF is all about competitive racing and having fun. For those new drivers that might be intimidated that they haven't been racing for a long time like other drivers and might be intimidated to try, here are rules to allow them more seat time and to not worry about crashing out of the race after only a few laps.

All the league rules are the same for rookies for racing except the following:

1. Any rookie driver gets unlimited deslots in heat races, and B-main (after every fourth de-slot they will serve a time penalty just like veteran drivers)

2. Floor rule stays in effect for rookies in B-main and final.

3. Rookie Drivers get 20 deslots in final race instead of 12.

4. At the end of their rookie season, or 16th race whichever comes later, the veteran drivers vote on if they are no longer a rookie (thanks JW for this idea)

5. Drivers that have rookie status revoked by veteran drivers receive four extra deslots per heat and finals for all races up to and including their 25th ISF start.
(this rule is forfeited by the driver if they no longer run on a regular basis. They then fall into the categories below)

6. Once a driver completes 25 races they receive the same amount of deslots as veteran drivers 

7. Drivers that return to the league but have more than 16 previous starts but less than 40 starts (i.e. Cory or Nic)
get an extra four deslots in the heats and finals for any one-off appearance, or the first eight races in the season in which they return full time, or total of eight races over two seasons if they are part-time racers

8. Drivers who have been away from the series for three years or more and have more than 40 starts (i.e. Chad Sorce or Jim Iverson), receive an extra four deslots in all heat races and finals for one-off races, or for a total of five races in their first season if they are returning as full or part-time drivers

ISF 2018 Rules Announcement

Hi Racers,

Fall is fast approaching and that means the 19^t.h season of ISF racing is about to begin.
After much reflection and feedback there are going to be some changes for this year.

The first is the schedule itself.
Over the last several years new racers have joined and more tracks have been added.
The SHMUC series has been a big hit and people have expressed interest in trying different racing events for fun and friendship.

With those ideas in mind the ISF schedule is going back to 10 events or less.
All of the races will be scheduled from September-January and will dovetail with the Indyslotcar series with ISF events being hosted in the week before or after the Indyslotcar event.

From January to May the SHMUC series will take over.
SHMUC will put together the schedule and let us all know about that series separately

By compacting the ISF dates it leaves several dates open for tracks to host other events (i.e. a 57 Chevy race, vintage race cars, or the return of the 2.4 hour race.   
It also allows SHMUC to have the freedom to have more special events of the SHMUC series.

The second change is the tires.
For GTP ISF is moving from the PVT-01 to a new tire.
ISF will be purchasing a big lot of tires. These tires are hard compound and the league will be surprised if you need more than two sets for the entire year. The downside is they are $3 per set.
Drivers will be asked to purchase tires from the league so everyone has tires from the same lot.
If they last as long as indicated in testing you might get away with sets lasting for several seasons.
Drivers keep the tires that are purchased.

The same tire for GTP will also be the same tire for F1. 

This new tire can be used on either stock or double flanged rims.
Rim size needs to be a minimum of .250 for the tire to work.
Tyco stock tires will again be used. They have to be treaded and have stock lettering or remains of lettering.

Drivers can have tires mounted on a spare axle for pit stops if they choose.
The league will hand out the stock tires at each race and will have a big lot of stock tires that drivers can pick from at each race.

On the schedule we also have two races marked for TV races. We’ve done a few broadcasts in the past and either date, or maybe both dates, will mark the 250 ISF event.

In looking at de-slots all drivers now have the same amount of de-slots. None of the series regulars have “rookie” status any longer.

Race nights start promptly at 6:30  and there will be a running clock for all heat races and finals, with exceptions only being called by the marshals.

This will be a shorter and intense season and we look forward to competing with you again!

In the continuing series profiling ISF drivers, this week it is Mike Fitzlaff:
First Car: 
1967 Ford Mustang 6 cyl. 3 speed. It used to belong to Hales and Mile employee (also West Allis Central Auto Shop teacher) Paul Elliot. I bought it from my dad for $200.

Favorite car that you have owned: 
1974 Pontiac Trans Am 400 with a Borg Warner T-10 rock crusher transmission, BFGoodrich Radial TA 50 tires. It was like driving a Slinger Late Model on the street.

Favorite all time race driver and why: 
Its a tie between Alan Kulwicki and Rick Mears. They both were great racers and they worked hard to get to the top. But they both never forgot where they came from and always have had (Alan) and for Rick will take the time to talk with anyone who approaches him. To me they are/were genuine good peopleLeast favorite race car driver and why: 
I have one but for personal reasons I don't want to name him.

Favorite movie:  "Crash",  favorite comedy, "Office Space" 
 
Favorite movie about cars:
"Gone in 60 Seconds" (original version) 

Favorite book:
Any book writen by James Patterson.

Worst pickup line a woman has used on you:
"I could just eat you up".

Favorite memory from your time in the SlotIRL?
Winning the final Championship for that series.   
 
You worked with Alan Kulwicki. What would be one thing that people would be suprised to know about him? 
At the shop we were using on south 13th street he would do this strange dance (we named it the "wervul") everytime the song "Hey Baby I'm the Telephone Man" came on the radio. I don't remember who sang it. That was his alias Alan Kultinski dancing.

Hands down...John Shea. He will race race you tough but clean.

What profession, besides your current one and race car driver, would you like to try? Radiologist. I think it is a very interesting profession.

Favorite drink? 
Water,nice and cold.  Otherwise a Hard Mike's Cranberry.

"24" I have never missed an episode since the begining. 

First “real job” was:
Dishwasher at the "Coach Light Inn" back in 1973 or 74. It is now known as "The Milwaukee Grill" on 76 th and Forest Home. 

Besides racing, what is your favorite sport to watch? 
Football (college and pro)

Getting to stand in the pit chute with 24 screaming Late Models inches away, and with a wave of my hand they were off to do battle, especially during the SummerNationals shows. That would be the best job I ever had also!

Past Tracks: Deercross, HORA, Inside Edge, Shrine, Deckertring

It is always fun to take a look at some of the places slot cars have run in the history of the ISF, Indyslotcar, and ARA. Here are a few of them:

Chicago, and as it was originally known was Deercrosss, was owned by Tony Perkins who competed in all three leagues. This was his second version of his track. it was originally housed and raced at in Indianapolis, then later moved to Chicago, and for one year both cities. Ev Kamikawa won the first four years that the track hosted an Indyslotcar event, then later won the only ISF F1 event at the track for five wins in five starts on the track. The track was later bought by Team Ferrari and many of the iconic buildings and pieces are incorporated into Rapids International Raceway
 


Above is the Inside Edge. It hosted events in all three leagues. The oval was the home of the Indyslotcar Indy 500 for many years. Another track dominated by Ev Kamikawa. This is the second version built and was very similar to Rapids, hence probably why Kamikawa won on it so much.

Road America is iconic in the racing world. Two HO (hence "HORA") versions have been used by Indyslotcar, with this version, the second, also being used by ISF. Owned by the famous Amy Butler, the track was novel in its use of live video cameras and moving pitlane dioramas. The layout was sold and its whereabouts are unknown.

The revised Shrine as owned by Phil Cianciola. The original Shrine Track was the first in the league and underwent several versions with the last one being the favorite as drivers shot down a long straight and twisted through the rocks and hills. After Cianciola retired the track was bought by current Indyslotcar commissioner Mike Kristof, and with only a couple of minor tweaks to fit into the new space it occupies, it has hosted races in Indyslotcar and ISF.

The design layout for the Deckertring as owned by John Shea. It was never raced, but tested. Nothing of this version was really used in the current layout although the carousel and the Mercedes Curve were inspired by it.
